I have always adored creating.  I love to make beautiful and delicious things.  All kinds of art make my heart come alive.  Seven or eight years ago now, I began selling Christmas confections for fun and for gift money. I was a single mom then, with two little boys, and I loved being able to create all kinds of marketable goodness from my very own kitchen (with music playing and candles burning, of course!)  Since those beginning days, I have added more confections and more holidays to my repertoire, but toffee has remained my signature and most requested indulgence.

 

But wait . . . this is just "my story" so far.   Now, I live in a crazy-beautiful "our story." Three years ago, my boys and I married my husband and his three girls.  (We almost have a "Brady Bunch."  And actually, I say we DO, because my husband loves taking turns as a kid.) This new husband of mine loves to dream with, and for, me. Ever since our very first year together, he has repeatedly said . . . "Love,  you really should think about doing more with that toffee!"  Usually, I just moved onto the next subject rather quickly and chalked up his enthusiasm to smittenness. However, the seasonal momentum and the demand for our toffee has continued to grow. 

 

This past Christmas, after my most successful Thanksgiving-Christmas season to date, my friend Elise called me:  "Rebecca, seriously now, you need to share your toffee with more people.  How about DURHAM?"  She was so energetically persuasive that she almost convinced me that my toffee could make that Bull dance!  

 

Still, I was unconvinced until weeks later when God spoke directly into my wonderings.  My mother-in-law came to town and insisted that we visit Smitten Boutique in downtown Durham.  (Of course, this is divine communication!  Am I right, Ladies?)  While paying for my treats, we inadvertently found ourselves in toffee conversation with Nancy, Smitten's artsy and clever owner.  "Let's launch Durham Toffee right here in my shop!  Let's do it for Valentines' Day!"  I left her sweet little shop wondering what had just happened.  I shared the story with my husband and now we feel somewhat like we have a tiger--or a BULL--by the tail.

 

We do love Durham, and David grew up here and has watched the blossoming, the "coming alive."  Something in our hearts awakens to the idea of creating and offering something SHAREWORTHY for our hometown.  And so . . .  the adventure builds.  Almost every conversation swirls into some sort of toffee brainstorm.  Even our kids have caught the excitement and contributed, each in his or her own way.  David and I are expectant and determined to FULLY LIVE each step of the journey.
